Believed to be the descendants of the German Spitz, it is thought that German immigrants brought the American Eskimo to the United States. Following WWI their name was changed, due in part for patriotic reasons, from the German Spitz to the American Eskimo. Although they are closely related, today the two are recognized as distinct breeds. Within the American Eskimo breed, there are three separate divisions based on size. The mid- range division includes the American Eskimo Miniature Dogs. The standards for the miniature version comprise a height of twelve to fifteen inches at the withers and a weight of ten to twenty pounds. Any dog measurements below these ranges fall into the Toy category and greater than these indicate a Standard American Eskimo.
The constant desire to please its owner along with the loving, affectionate personality makes this dog a great family pet. It has a natural instinct to be protective and guarding of its family and loved ones in addition to an innate suspicion of strangers, creating an ideal watchdog. With proper introduction to a stranger, that is not a threat; American Eskimo Miniature Dogs will quickly take to a stranger. These highly intelligent animals are easy to train, although they do require early socialization and training, like puppy classes to prevent unwanted behaviors. With proper training, socialization and attention these make wonderful additions to any home.
Because of their size, American Eskimo Miniature Dogs can feel at home in almost any environment. From the city apartment to the country home, given the appropriate care, they can become an excellent companion/ guard dog.
They do require routine grooming from an attentive owner. Their beautiful coats require bi-weekly if not more brushing to maintain a mat free existence and to remove loose fur to prevent unnecessary shedding. While most of the times they are considered average shedders, during the spring and fall when they are blowing their coats, the shedding becomes heavy. During these few weeks, daily brushing in addition to the use of an under coat rake is necessary.
The over all care and maintenance of this amazing dog requires a persistent, loving, affectionate owner. What you sow, so shall you reap. Prior to purchasing American Eskimo Miniature Dogs for sale, it is advisable to spend time talking with your breeder about the necessary steps that need to be followed to assure that you and the dog will be happy. By researching and understanding what will be required of you as a dog owner of this breed, you will quickly be able to decide if this dog will be a good match for you and your situation.
